   The Art Club

Swillington Art Group has now been present for over 10 years in the village. It was started by Jim Carrie a local artist to encourage "would be " artists to practice and improve their skills in the company of others with similar interests. the group has grown in number over the years and up to 14-15 members are normally present on any Wednesday evening in the Swillington Community Centre. There were, however, times in the early years of the group, when just three or four members continued to meet weekly in order that the "Art Group" did not fade away, as so many clubs and groups have in rural areas, and their efforts have been rewarded. The members are of all ages (over 16) and pay £2 per week membership.

In the early years the group met in the old Methodist Church Hall and for a short period in Primrose House before being able to book a permanent Wednesday night slot at the Community Centre. Members are free to work in the medium of their choice, ie watercolour, pastels, acrylics, oils etc. Sculpture has also made the odd appearance in the group.

Each year an exhibition of work produced by the group is held in the centre over the August Bank Holiday. The exhibition is well attended and many visitors remark on the variety of the styles and skills demonstrated by the group. Many visitors also remark on how "colourful" the exhibition is. Works on show can be purchased by the visitors and removed after the exhibition ends.

The members welcome anyone who wishes to come along to see how they work ( and possibly join the group) on Wednesday evenings between 7 and 9 pm.
