Swillington
in Bloom Group was formed in May 2002. Our aim is to improve the appearance of
the village and encourage community pride and involvement.
Swillington
enters the Yorkshire in Bloom competition each year; in 2002 we were bottom of
our category, which is “small country town”, others in this category include
Kippax/Addingham/Haworth and Dunnington.
In
2006 our members were thrilled to achieve a Bronze Award; the certificate
has been on display in the Post Office. In 2007 we topped this by winning a Silver
Award certificate. This fantastic achievement, in five years, is the work of
just seven volunteers; think what we could do with something like the numbers
that turn out in Barwick in Elmet!!
So what does being a volunteer involve? Well, some have the enthusiasm to give three or four hours a week, for others it’s once a fortnight, it’s whatever time you can spare. We plant spring and summer bedding, weed and maintain the planters and flowerbeds. We have transformed several areas already and have a number of other projects which we would like to start, given enough willing hands. We would like someone who could take on the task of bringing the local businesses on board, if you’re not up to the physical work but have a persuasive personality you’d be very welcome. The group meet to plan and discuss on the last Wednesday of the month the meeting lasts about one and a half hours, attendance isn’t compulsory by any means. Come along and meet us you’ll be under no obligation!! For details contact the secretary, via e-mail, or introduce yourself to a member, we are easy to spot out working in a “high visibility” Swillington in Bloom jacket.
When you drive through Swillington and admire the flower beds and boxes displayed at various sites, do you ever wonder who is responsible?. the couple of pictures below show the people involved and the effort they put in for our benefit. Just click any thumbnail for a larger view.
